Application

Assesses learning ability in the context of non-verbal memory material.
Disorders of memory play an important part in many clinical disorders and injuries. They have a major impact on the patient’s quality of life and can cause significant difficulties both in private life and at work. Careful neuropsychological assessment and differentiation of these memory impairments is particularly important in predicting the course of the illness, in assessing the patient’s occupational and social prospects and in planning suitable rehabilitation measures. The test is therefore used mainly in clinical neuropsychology.

The respondent is shown a sequence of either geometric or irregularly shaped figures. For each figure respondents are required to decide whether they have seen it before or whether it is being presented for the first time.

Formes de test

S1: Long form A S2: Short form A
S3: Visual discrimination test – for use with respondents of below-average ability
S11: Long form B – parallel test form
S12: Short form B – parallel test form

Évaluation

The following main variables are scored:

  • Sum of the differences between correct and incorrect YES answers: Measure of learning ability.
  • Sum of correct YES answers: Measure of the ability to recognize repeatedly presented items as such.
  • Sum of incorrect YES answers: Measure of the ability to identify items that have not previously been presented as new items and to distinguish them from recurring items.

The subsidiary variables enable separate scoring of learning performance for geometric (high-associative) and irregular (low-associative) figures. Dual coding is easier for the geometric, high-associative items than for the low-associative ones, since it can be assumed that high-associative items can be coded verbally as well as pictorially.
