Application

Assesses selective attention, decision speed and motor reaction speed in response to a succession of rapidly presented visual movement stimuli.

The test assesses the linked abilities of attention, decision-making and reaction speed in relation to movement. This complex reaction ability is measured in the upper ability range. The linking of attention, decision speed and reaction speed is important and very well known in everyday life, for example in driving situations and in high-level sport. Poor performance is often attributed to problems with one of these components or the combination of them. The MDT is therefore used in personnel psychology and in investigations in the fields of traffic psychology and sports psychology.

A ball is shown on the screen; after a short time the ball starts to move towards one of the screen’s corners. The respondent’s task is to react correctly to this movement by pressing a particular key.

Formes de test

S1: Simple reaction, movement – pressing a button as soon as a movement is perceived
S2: Choice reaction, direction of movement – the respondent presses a particular button depending on the ball’s direction of movement
S3: Choice reaction, direction of movement with changing color coding – the respondent presses a particular button depending on the color of the corner towards which the ball moves

Évaluation

The following main variables are scored:

  • Median and interquartile range of detection time: The time between the start of presentation of an item and completion of the motor response. This is divided into cognitive reaction time and motor time.
  • Median and interquartile range of cognitive reaction time: The time between the start of presentation of an item (start of the movement of the ball) and the moment the finger leaves the rest button – measure of attentional performance and decision speed.
  • Median and interquartile range of motor time: The time between the moment the finger leaves the rest button and the moment it touches a target button – measure of reaction speed.

Additional variables enable performance to be considered in a more nuanced way.
